It seems that Freema Agyeman is eager to return to the world of Doctor Who. Agyeman is well-known for playing the companion Martha Jones, who appeared in Season 3 of the revived series, alongside David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
Tragically, Agyeman only stayed for one season, meaning her character never got the chance to be fully explored, despite her walking the Earth to save the Doctor from his enemy, the Master (played by John Simm). If Martha were to have one more trip on the TARDIS, when would it be?
Never Say Never
Speaking to Radio Times, Agyeman has explained her thoughts and feelings about working on the hit BBC science fiction show. In an interview about her experience as Martha, Agyeman said:
“I had a really great time on the show, I really loved the character, it brings so many people so much joy. So never say never! I feel like there was more to explore with Martha, definitely, but I don’t know what form that would take.”
When Agyeman departed the show in 2007, fans were treated to her return during Season 4 for five episodes alongside Catherine Tate, who was the Doctor's companion at the time. However, after her last appearance in #DoctorWho in 2010, Agyeman stayed in the Doctor Who universe by working with Big Finish Productions, starring in a number of audio stories.
“I know I kept doing audiobooks until after I’d even left the show. So I don’t know – it could be case of maybe one day, maybe one day soon, maybe one day in 30 years time. We will wait and see.”
Maybe For A Special Episode
The last big Doctor Who special episode was back in 2013, where the BBC celebrated its 50-year anniversary with a feature-length special. However, many fans were left disappointed when David Tennant returned without a companion. Billie Piper was in the special, but not as Rose Tyler. Instead, Piper reprised her role as Bad Wolf, who popped up throughout the episode.
There have been discussions in the past of whether or not the BBC will celebrate Doctor Who's 70th or 75th anniversary. There's no doubt that such an event would be a multi-Doctor story, but could it be more adventurous than "The Day of the Doctor"?
As seen in both Doctor Who as well as Torchwood, Martha works for U.N.I.T., meaning her return to the show has now been made easier than ever. With someone like the Master threatening the universe once again, Martha would be an ideal companion, especially considering how she has defeated the powerful Master in the past.
With Agyeman hinting of a return in 30 years' time, there's every possibility that she could make a comeback as a retired soldier who is eager for one last battle. As Tom Baker has proved, you're never too old to make a return to Doctor Who.
Who would you like Martha to take on if she were to return? Sound off in the comments!
