Between K-9 and Company, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, countless novelizations, short stories, comics, and webcasts, Doctor Who is no stranger to a good spinoff series. But the BBC's latest venture to expand the Whoniverse looks like it might be the best attempt yet.
The upcoming eight-episode spinoff series Class is about six students and staff of Coal Hill Academy, all of whom are feeling the repercussions that come with time travel. As the Doctor's frequent visits have damaged the walls of space and time, and otherworldly forces start to threaten Earth, it's up those at Coal Hill Academy to keep our planet safe.
Basically, if Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Men and Doctor Who had an awesome sci-fi baby, it would look a lot like Class — and I can't wait to tune in. Watch the first official look at Class below.
Coal Hill Academy
Coal Hill Academy has been a regular visiting site for The Doctor since the very first episode "An Unearthly Child" in 1963. It appeared again in "Remembrance of the Dalek and "The Day of the Doctor," and was regularly shown in Series 8.
After this trailer, I'm wondering how Clara Oswald, who was a teacher at the school in the series, will fit into the storyline. Will Jenna Coleman be reprising her role?
Some of the main characters shown in the trailer include Charlie (Greg Austin), Ram (Fady Elsayed), April (Sophie Hopkins), Tanya (Vivian Oparah), Miss Quill (Katherine Kelly), and Mr. Armitage (Nigel Betts).
From the Doctor's voiceover in the teaser, it sounds like these students will be learning far more than your average high school student.
"I can travel through space and I can travel through time, but I can't always be there when you need me. Sometimes you have to take survival upon yourselves."
"What Will You Do When The Shadows Come?"
As if high school wasn't scary enough on its own, let's throw some eerie shadow monsters into the mix.

"And You Can't Turn Away From The Darkness Ahead?"
I think that sliver of glowing blue light is actually a rip in space and time, like the one that seeped through Amy Pond's childhood room. We get another look at a similar tear in the next shot.
A Slight Tear In Space And Time
As we know all too well from Amy's story, one small rip in time and space can cause a whole mess of problems.
For Time Has Looked At Your Faces. And Time Never Forgets."
Will The Doctor at least be around, Professor X-style, to help teach these kids how to protect themselves? I certainly hope so. Either way, I'm totally sold on the series.
Class will premier on October 22 on BBC Three.
