The buzz around Star Wars is humungous right now, with two fantastic films made since Disney bought Lucasfilm (The Force Awakens, Rogue One) it's easy to get excited for the future of Star Wars. One Star Wars movie in particular I'm stoked for is the Han Solo spin-off movie, and one reason for that is the casting of one of my favorite actors: Donald Glover. If you follow the rest of my articles then you know I adore Donald Glover, I think he's the most multi-talented dude on this planet (between his range in acting, music career and writing capabilities). I was ecstatic when he got cast as a younger Lando Calrissian for the Han Solo Star Wars anthology movie earlier this year because he's the perfect choice, something Disney seems to be doing great at since taking ownership of Star Wars (John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley as Rey).
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, #DonaldGlover spoke about how he's going to be taking a different approach to Lando, unlike the one we're used to. He explained that Lando isn't the same as you remember him in The Empire Strikes Back:
"I remember Lando really well... Cool changes depending on the perspective... Also, it's fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before ['Empire Strikes Back'], so he's still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun."
Does this mean we're going to get a nerdy, uncool Lando? Well, not necessarily. Donald Glover explained that:
"[Lando] was the cool one. I just realized, he still has to be cool. And cool is an interesting thing. It changes... I was watching 'Black Mirror,' and there's an episode where they go through time and in the '50s, there's a nerd, and by the time he gets to the 2000s, he's just a hipster. He's not a nerd anymore."
Donald Glover was always popular amongst fans for being the "nerdy one," which is best illustrated in the hit TV show Community, where he plays the lovable nerd Troy. But there's no denying that Donald Glover is irresistibly cool, just look at his rap alter ego Childish Gambino who is one killer smooth. If you need proof of said smoothness, check out his incredible performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon below!
It's safe to say that 2016 was a terrific year for Donald Glover, dropping the fantastic album released Awaken, My Love! and his show Atlanta delivering a brilliant first season, winning multiple awards. On top of that, being cast in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming and as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie, it's been surreal for Glover. His resume is blossoming to be a widely ranged one, with comedic writing credits on 30 Rock to drama chops in Atlanta; put a #StarWars movie and a Marvel movie alongside that and you're set for Hollywood glory. Hopefully he'll flourish in the role of Lando and we might even see a Lando spin-off movie!
As for what kind of character we're going to see Donald Glover create as Lando, it probably will be a small role rather than a starring one. Lando Calrissian is not necessarily the Chewbacca to Han Solo, but that's not to say we can't see some hijinks between Lando and Han too! Lando and Han Solo need to have great chemistry on screen, with tensions boiling while also throwing some humor there too. Lando and Han have had some run-ins over the years and I'd love to see that further explored in the movie. Another aspect I'd like to see of Lando in this movie is how he came to power in Cloud City.
I'd love to know your guys' thoughts. what kind of Lando do you want to see in the Han Solo spin-off movie?
Are you excited about Donald Glover being cast as Lando?
