2016 has been a great year for Donald Glover — his new show #Atlanta has burst onto the scene, and garnered pretty much universal acclaim from critics and viewers alike. As well as that, he landed not one, but two, hugely coveted nerdy parts: a mysterious role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the part of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming young Han Solo Star Wars movie. Donald Glover is an incredibly talented actor & writer, and I'm sure there's lots of things you don't know about him — let's look at some them.
1. As Well As A Talented Actor/Writer, He's Also An Amazing Rapper
Donald Glover can do just about anything — he's hilarious in Community, a fantastic serious actor in Atlanta and on top of that, he's one of the best rappers out there at the moment. His first album, Camp, was a great debut album to which he followed up with the insanely popular Because of the Internet. Fans of Childish Gambino are eagerly waiting for his next album, Pharos, which he said is coming soon.
In a recent promo for his show Atlanta, there's an unreleased Childish Gambino track which could be on his next album — who knows? Check it out below!
2. He Was Only 21 When He Was Hired to Write for 30 Rock!
Donald Glover is a man of many talents, and for a huge TV comedy is something at the tender age of 21 only scratches the surface of his talent. Tina Fey got him to write for the popular comedy show, 30 Rock, which ran from 2006 to 2013. Donald Glover's other writing credentials include Atlanta, and many of his own music videos.
3. He's Been Nominated For Both Music and TV Show Awards!
Community is a hugely beloved series that not only was a hit with fans, but also won awards. In the 2012 TV Guide Awards, the Community gang took home the award for favorite ensemble which also included Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi and the rest of the gang. For his writing credentials, 30 Rock won Best Comedy three years in a row at the Writers Guild of America Awards!
Glover's alter ego, Childish Gambino, has been nominated for various top music awards — he hasn't won yet, but I'm sure that will change. His best year for music nominations was in 2015 when he got nominated for an MTV Video Music Award and a Grammy! He was nominated for his fantastic song '3005' and hit album Because of The Internet, which is a pretty huge deal given how prestigious the Grammys are!

4. Donald Glover Influenced The Look of Spider-Man
As you already know, Glover has landed a dream role in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming. The reason I say "dream" is because Donald Glover is a huge fan of Spider-Man and back in 2010, as an internet joke, he started the the hashtag #donald4spiderman and the reaction was immense. Fans suddenly realized with the release of The Amazing Spiderman coming soon, Donald Glover would be perfect.
This news spread like wildfire in 2010 and even the main man, Stan Lee, had nothing but good things to say about Donald Glover:
"He's a great actor. I've seen him, and he's terrific". Stan Lee went on to say, "A lot of my Twitter followers have been saying that he ought to have a chance to audition for the role, so I tweeted back by saying, as far as I'm concerned, anybody should have a chance to audition for the role. I certainly think he should have a chance to audition."
The man behind creating The Ultimate Spiderman, Brian Michael Bendis, was also a fan of Donald Glover for Spider-Man. He told USA Today:
“I saw him in the costume and thought, ‘I would like to read that book.’ So I was glad I was writing that book.”
Brian M is one of this year's best new shows, it balances drama and comedy masterfully but still has a realistic tone that you know isn't far-fetched. Glover has had some definitive roles already in his early career, like his comedy relief in
"Even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided.”

5. He's Extremely Passionate & Wants Atlanta To Be A "Classic"
Atlanta is one of this years best new shows; it balances drama and comedy masterfully but still has a realistic tone. Glover has had some definitive roles already in his early career, like his comedy relief in The Martian, and his show-stealing in Community, but Atlanta is what he wants to be known for. In his interview with Vulture, he told how confident he is in the show:
“With this show, with this music, I’m just trying to make classics,” Glover went on to say, “The second season of Atlanta will be a classic.”
Glover also told TIME magazine on how he studied black iconography for the show to make it something iconic. He also said he wanted to push boundaries and talk about some controversial topics:
"Let’s make something that shouldn’t be on the air, something controversial. If it’s canceled in 10 episodes, I’ll be happy with those episodes."
If you haven't started Atlanta yet, you need to check it out! If you want to see what it's like, check out the trailer below...
6. He Shares His Birthday With Some Awesome People
September 25th may just be my favorite date of the year for celebrity birthdays. Donald Glover shares his birthday with the legendary actor Will Smith, Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill, and influential rapper T.I.
Donald Glover has something to do with two of these men — Glover is being confirmed to be playing Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo spin-off movie, which puts him in the same universe and Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. Glover has also rapped with Will Smith's son Jaden for his latest EP Kauai, where the duo sang 'Late Night' together.
7. He Recently Welcomed a Baby Into the World!
Not many people knew that Donald Glover had a girlfriend, let alone have a child! But this is no accident; the Community star likes to keep his personal life private and that means it would have been easy to miss that he had a kid at the start of October. It's good to see a celebrity like Donald Glover who's not possessed by the fame, keeping his private life out of the public eye really shows how modest he is.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of Donald Glover and I'd consider him a stellar role model for creative and driven individuals. I know for a fact that the 33 year old is only going to get bigger, especially after Atlanta and Spider-Man: Homecoming. I can't wait to see what projects he has lined up for us in movies and music in the future, but until then we have a lot of previous projects of his to admire.
