is a brutal and unforgiving journey that manages to break our hearts, disgust us, and leave us wondering what the hell just happened after every. single. episode. And yet we love it. Still, that's not to say it doesn't have its fun moments. As with any piece of entertainment, there's room for levity.

In the past, that levity has come from the show's musical cameos, which have included Coldplay, Snow Patrol, and Of Monsters and Men. Admittedly, their appearances don't interrupt the flow of a scene to add laughs, but they serve as a nice way for viewers to detract - even if it's for mere seconds - from the usually gut-wrenching storyline.

Well, as we learned last week, is coming soon, and the latest entry into the mythical world will indeed feature an appearance from a musical personality: Ed Sheeran. During a panel at SXSW, moderated by and Maisie Williams, show's creators, David Benioff and DB Weiss, confirmed the singer's appearance in the upcoming season. Later, Sheeran tweeted:

So far, it's unknown what type of role he'll have in the show. But we do know there is something more to this than just a fun collaboration, because...

As much as it may seem, the decision to have the singer on the show was not a random one. Turns out, the creators had been trying to get Ed to do a cameo appearance for years to please Arya Stark herself—known in real life as —who's a huge fan of the singer. As Beinoff explained:

“For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie. This year we finally did it.”

That's incredibly touching and thoughtful on their part, as Maisie has proven multiple times in the past to be a total Sheerio. I mean, she wore an shirt for a TV appearance:

I don't know what else she needs to do to prove her love for Sheeran.

However, there's something else to keep in mind: This could have been a more strategic move by Benioff and Weiss. Arya Stark is a total wildcard. She will strangle you the minute she gets annoyed by how you blink. Sp perhaps having her music idol on the show was an attempt by the creators to stay on the little assassin's good side for a little while longer... Good call.

I think it's safe to say that - given the circumstances - we should expect at least one scene of Ed Sheeran and together. They would certainly make an interesting combo.
