STARZ is looking to develop a US adaptation of the epic Italian crime drama Romanzo Criminale. The show, which was based on the 2002 novel by Giancarlo De Cataldo, was inspired by the notorious Magliana gang who ran Rome's heroin trade in the 1970s and 1980s. Like any good drama, Romanzo Criminale intertwined fact with fiction, shining a light on the dark history of modern Italy, detailing the rise of terrorism, kidnappings and corruption at the highest levels of government. There's also lots of big hair and mustaches. So many mustaches.
The STARZ adaptation will be penned by Spartacus scribe and will chart the rise of a Philadelphia working class criminal gang in the late sixties and early seventies.
Here's hoping the US remake can be as gripping and brutal as it's Italian counterpart.
