Some writers simply dream of finishing a novel (me), others dream of publishing best-sellers (also me), while yet others dream even bigger and envision their stories being adapted for the silver screen (still me). For author Cassandra Clare, it was a wild hope that her The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones series would one day be picked up by a movie studio and turned into a blockbuster film.
She recently chatted with MTV's Josh Horowitz, and explained that even with her movie-making roots, she never thought she'd see her dark, urban fantasy turned into a set of films:
My grandfather was a movie producer. I grew up in the film industry. I always knew movies aren't really happening until they're actually filming, and I thought this will never really happen. And then when they got [director] Harald [Zwart] on board, I really started to believe it could because he has such a passionate commitment to the project, and he's a very emotion-focused director. And he really wanted to focus on the characters and their relationships to each other with the special effects second. And I thought that was a really great quality in a fantasy-film director.
In fact, it wasn't until she saw actor in full costume on the set that it clicked that it was all really happening:
We were shooting in the subway, and they had closed off part of the subway for shooting, and I walked down the stairs to get to the set, and I saw Kevin Zegers in his full costume with runes and everything. And all the commuters were passing him by like they didn't see him. And I just thought, 'Oh my god. It's like we're in my book! He's here. He's invisible. It's like I've walked into a page of my book.' It was amazing.
For those not familiar with the awesome series (I've read them), the story revolves around normal, New York teenager Clary Fray (played by the lovely ), who, after her mother gets kidnapped, discovers she's part of a race of demon-slayers known as Shadowhunters. She teams up with the fearless, but arrogant, Jace () to unravel the mystery of who she is and how deep her powers run as she races to save her mother.
In case you missed it, here's the gorgeous extended trailer:
