Those of you who witnessed the recent Evil Dead trailer in all it's tongue-slicing, red-band glory will know that the film makers didn't hold back when it came to ratcheting up the gore, bloody vomit and generally nastiness.

Director has revealed on Twitter that the movie was originally given a NC-17 rating, but they had to dial back the bloodshed and cut out some gore in order to score an R. Alvarez tweeted:

The poster for Evil Dead promises the movie will be "The Most Terrifying Film You Will Ever Experience" and now I'm starting to believe them.

Evil Dead lands in theaters April 12th.

Was it right to cut Evil Dead to score an R-rating or would the movie be better as NC-17? Let me know what you think in the comments.
