Disney has an gigantic slate of upcoming live-action adaptations of their classic properties. From #Mulan to #TheLionKing, the studio is continuing to own the box office by reinventing its properties for a new generation Now, we are hearing our first bit of information about a plan to reboot the Winnie the Pooh franchise — and it's not how anyone expected.
The Hook Approach
For the upcoming #ChristopherRobin movie, Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, is in talks to star as the titular character, according to the Hollywood Reporter. McGregor would play the adult Christopher Robin, who’s lost his sense of imagination and is now a businessman focused on work and success. Presumably, he doesn't have time for #WinnieThePooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet or the rest of his childhood animal pals.
Disney's live-action film will be directed by World War Z director Marc Forster with a script from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures) and Tom McCarthy.
Can The Franchise Make A Comeback, Or Is It A Relic Of A Bygone Era?
This is an intriguing concept to say the least, applying the Hook formula to another once-beloved children's property, which has fallen out of favor in recent years. The 2011 Winnie the Pooh brought in a respectable profit — $50 million on a $30 million budget — but those aren't exactly Pixar figures.
Will the radical new approach of Christopher Robin make these characters relevant for modern audiences? Ewan McGregor is a charming actor, and even though this casting came out of left field and took us by surprise, there's no doubt it's an intriguing premise. Also, maybe this could be the actor's way of building goodwill at Disney so he can return as Obi-Wan in a future film?
