In terms of box-office earnings, Disney is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood; owning properties such as #StarWars, #Marvel and #Pixar, they are the top dogs. One trend they seem to love lately is making live-action remakes of their classic animated movies, such as Snow White, The Lion King and many more. One critical factor that Disney needs to get right when making these princess movies is the casting. So many movies are subject to whitewashing these days and a progressive company like Disney should always spot on with this kind of thing, so hopefully they'll stay true to the upcoming princesses. We're going to look at the princesses in particular for this fancasting.
1. Mulan (Mulan)
Actor: Fan Bingbing
Notable Roles: X-Men: Days of Future Past, Skiptrace
Release Date: November 2, 2018
Fan Bingbing is a a multi-talented actress from China, who also works as a television producer and singer! You may recognize her for her role as Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is her biggest movie to date. I was impressed with her minor role as the awesome mutant and I'd love to see more of her in future films — and what better than as one of Disney's most heroic characters, #Mulan.
2. Jasmine (Aladdin)
Actor: Aiysha Hart
Notable Roles: Honour, Atlantis
Release Date: TBD
Aiysha Hart is another exciting up-and-coming actress that's shown some potential in recent years. Aiysha is half Middle-Eastern and half British, and, as you can tell from the picture above, she looks strikingly like Aladdin's Jasmine. Aiysha has mainly stuck to TV roles in recent years, with shows such as Atlantis, Line of Duty and her latest show on the BBC, New Blood. Her most notable movie role to date is her 2014 thriller Honour, which also starred Paddy Considine.
I really think Aiysha Hart would make a fantastic choice for Jasmine mainly because of how much she looks like the princess from Aladdin. Her looks along with her experience in a big budget project (Atlantis) mean she's ready to make her mark on the world as one of Disney's live-action princesses.
3. Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
Actor: Saoirse Ronan
Notable Roles: The Lovely Bones, The Host, Hannah
Release Date: TBD
The young Irish actress is one of Hollywood's most exciting talents right now, just coming off one of the best films last year, Brooklyn. Saoirse Ronan will be looking for a huge role to sky-rocket her fame, and what better than a live-action #Disney princess movie. Saoirse's film schedule is pretty full right now, with four films coming out in the next year. Squeezing in The Little Mermaid could be difficult, but I'd love to see her in the role. Check out her Best Actress-nominated performance in Brooklyn below:
Ariel's red hair and bright blue eyes are a necessity when looking for an actress to play Ariel and although many people online would love to see Game of Thrones's Sophie Turner to play the role, I don't think she has the same infectious charisma that Saoirse Ronan brings to her films. In addition to that, #Ariel needs to be able to sing, so check out Saoirse Ronan singing below!
4. Snow White (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs)
Actor: Zooey Deschanel
Notable Roles: 500 Days of Summer, New Girl, Yes Man
With her quirky humor and indie-style, Zooey Deschanel is undoubtedly Hollywood's original hipster. Her fantastic optimism and great singing voice would combine to make her a perfect candidate for a Disney Princess, and I think #SnowWhite is the best option. For me, I think this could be the most obvious casting of all the princesses on this list!
One drawback that could prevent Zooey Deschanel from taking the role she was born for is her age. Snow White is 14 and Zooey Deschanel is 36, which makes this a tough casting. They could either do a story where Snow White is actually in her thirties (which doesn't really change anything) or just cast a different actress. I'm going to go with the first idea, purely because I think Zooey Deschanel would be fantastic in the role.
Saoirse Ronan is not the only actress on this list that has a wonderful voice, Zooey Deschanel is a fantastic singer with a insanely memorable voice. Listen to her sing "Dream a Little Dream of Me" below!
I'm really excited to see how these live-action remakes turn out. I was originally very skeptical of remakes because of Cinderella and Into the Woods, but The Jungle Book restored my faith and since then I've been stoked to see the rest of them released in theaters! I'm most excited for Snow White, because that's the film I watched religiously as a kid, but I'd love to know which film you guys are most excited for; let me know in the comments!
