Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them introduces us to the lovable and adventurous Newt Scamander, played by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne. Scamander is quite the unique character, as he does not seem to care about rules and laws; he only cares about learning more about mythical creatures.
As much as we love this new animal-loving character, we all know he is not the first of his kind in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Before Newt Scamander, there was another character who loved animals just as much, and was way more quirky and, arguably, way more lovable...
Audiences and readers first met Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and were immediately mesmerized by her blissful and quirky antics. Whether she was adoring the Thestrals that Harry thought he was imagining, or identifying a Pygmy Puff on Ginny's shoulder, it was clear that Luna's love of animals was a truly powerful force.
Neither the books nor the movies told us what became of Luna Lovegood after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Most people assumed she went on to marry Neville Longbottom, as the two seemed to have a strong connection. However, J.K. Rowling later revealed that this was not the case.
Over the years, J.K. Rowling has given more and more information about the fate of some of our favorite characters, including Luna. Luna went on to become a wizarding naturalist, which as we can imagine has a large focus on animals.
"Luna became a very famous wizarding naturalist who discovered and classified many new species of animals (though, alas, she never did find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack and had, finally, to accept that her father might have made that one up)." - J.K. Rowling
During her work, Luna met a young man with whom she shared an interest in mythical creatures. She later married him and together they had three children. Who was this man?
Rolf Scamander is the grandson of Newt Scamander, who, as mentioned earlier, is the main character in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Rolf became the Chief Consulting Magizoologist for the Daily Prophet. Clearly, the animal-loving characteristics of Newt carried on through the family to Rolf.
Based on how much of an animal lover Newt is in Fantastic Beasts, we could imagine that he and Luna would have hit it off too had they been around the same age. This is why the partnership of Luna and Rolf makes so much sense. While Rolf never appeared in a book or movie, he was mentioned by Rowling numerous times, including in Pottermore. Based on what we know, their quirkiness and bliss fit perfectly hand in hand.

The cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them aren't the only ones who love a beast...
Luna Lovegood is the granddaughter-in-law of Newt Scamander. And if that's too much of a stretch for you, then Luna's children are Newt's great-grandchildren. Newt Scamander is not connected to many other Harry Potter characters, save Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and it is rather fitting that Luna is the only character he has a family connection to. Their similarities are hard not to notice.
