Fast & Furious 6 opens in US theaters this weekend, but it has already raced off the starting line in the UK and Ireland, taking first position at the box office and scoring Universal their biggest ever opening day in that market.

According to Yahoo Movies, the sixth installment of the high-octane, street racing franchise raked in $4.6 million on Friday, beating the $3.6 million that Universal's previous best, Fast & Furious, banked in 2009.

Despite its excellent box office takings Fast & Furious 6 did not have the biggest UK opening of the year, with Marvel's Iron Man 3 still the top dog at the box office after Tony Stark's latest outing brought in $4.7 million.

Fast & Furious 6 opens on Friday in the US and in 59 international territories.

Will you be checking out the latest adventure for Dom and the gang when it lands in theaters?
