The mystery of Father Gabriel's actions and whereabouts bookended the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead on Sunday evening. As "Rock in the Road" opened Gabriel seemed to make an out of character decision to clear Alexandria of its food and weapons and make a break for it. However, as the priest was leaving the town, it was revealed he was joined by another person.

Before Gabriel left he was seen riffling through pages of a notebook, which would later reveal to Rick clues to his whereabouts. So what did that book say, and where exactly did Gabriel end up? Let's take a look!

So the book that Gabriel was riffling through was Alexandria's weapons inventory. And if you thought it was strange that someone had doodled a bit picture of Lucille over the top of it, that was because it most likely drawn when the Saviors visited the community in Episode 4 and took most of their guns. Here's Arat with the registry book back then:

As Gabriel thumbed through the book, he muttered that he was "just checking" it. This was probably to double check what he already knew — that the community only have two guns, and they were safely stowed in the holsters of Rick and Carl on their visits to Hilltop and the Kingdom. Here you can clearly see that the two guns have been checked out:

After "just checking" that there were no extra guns in the community, Gabriel went on to clear out all the melee weapons that the town had, including hatchets and machetes.

But while early we had only seen Gabriel flipping through the book, it turned out he had cleverly left a message on the back page for Rick, which read "BOAT." Luckily both Rick and Aaron instantly knew that it referred to the house boat where they recently gathered a pile of supplies.

Once there, they soon found themselves following a trail which eventually lead to the territory of that brand new community, though it looked like Gabriel was nowhere to be seen. While it seems the most obvious answer that the priest is being held somewhere among the group, perhaps back at their sleeping quarters, it unfortunately (and annoyingly) looks like we'll have to wait until Episode 10 to get any more answers on his wellbeing.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC with Episode 10, "New Best Friends" on February 19
