While The Santa Clarita Diet definitely killed Drew Barrymore's character — on the inside at least — it has recently emerged that the iconic actor herself also almost shuffled into her mortal coil on set thanks to a relatively low-key stunt.

During a scene where Barrymore has to pounce ferociously onto another actor's back, she fell off and smashed her skull on the concrete and, to use her own words, "almost died."

Drew explained to US Weekly that it was by far the most serious incident that has happened to her in her long career:

"It was f--king terrifying. It was very serious. I've never had a feeling like that in my life."

But, how exactly can leaping onto someones back go so wrong that it lands you with a severe concussion? According to executive producer Victor Cresco:

"The actor was a wide guy and Drew didn’t get a great grip. Then he held onto her legs as she slipped off, and so she just pivoted down all the way and just hit her head. I thought, 'That's it. We've killed Drew Barrymore.'"

Luckily for them, survived the ordeal and was forced by paramedics to endure two days worth of MRIs and CAT scans to check her brain had escaped the bashing unscathed.

Naturally, Drew was nervous to come back and redo the scene once she had recovered, but there was also a glass-half-full side effect to the incident. Drew explained:

"I love that this group of people, who aren't family necessarily, are coming together and care about my well-being. It was a nice moment where you see the good in people."

So, let's all thank our lucky stars we don't have to live in a post-Drew world and keep our fingers crossed for a second series!

What is the weirdest way you've hurt yourself?
