For everybody who loved 's stage adaptation Carnage, his upcoming Venus in Fur should represent a treat.

Both are very dark comedies, with a limited number of characters who behave in a particularly mean way to each other. Venus is Fur is based on David Ives play of the same name.

The film boasts even fewer characters though, and adds a considerable amount of sauciness to the proceedings. It centers on an actress (played by Polanski's wife ) who comes too late to an audition and tries to persuade the director of the play () to cast her nevertheless. The image above teases this process of "persuasion". The play in question is an adaptation of the novel Venus in Fur by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Yep, that's where the term masochism comes from. Expect Polanski to be in his element!

Venus in Fur has its world premiere at the Film Festival in Cannes where it will compete for the Golden Palm.
