This year has been a tumultuous ride to say the least. From start to finish, we have been constantly receiving news about the deaths of beloved actors, actresses, singers, performers, and athletes. Some people thought that since the year coming to a close, there would be a respite from the madness; but with the recent deaths of George Michael, Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds it would seem that 2016 isn't quite done yet.
Let's take a moment and remember some the amazing people we lost in 2016 (excluding some of the more recent losses, because who could predict how savage 2016 would be?!):
Since 2016 is apparently still on the war path, one man has decided to take things into his own hands, to insure a beloved actress remains safe until the new year. South Carolina resident, Demetrios Hrysikos, has set up a Go Fund Me campaign, that looks to insure the safety of legendary actress #BettyWhite.
Betty White's Bodyguard
The idea of someone personally protecting a celebrity until 2017 could seem a bit outlandish, but it's actually for a good cause. As it turns out, Demetrios Hrysikos Go Fund Me page is a cleverly disguised fundraiser for a local community theater. His original pitch was as follows:
Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White! If she's okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1 , 2017. Now, assuming she doesn't want a strange Greek standing guard outside her door all monies will be donated to the Spartanburg little theater to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry mantle of the legends that have left is this year.
It's a novel idea, seeing that Betty White will most likely not be requiring his services, Mr. Hrysikos has created a unique conduit, that is more intriguing than your average run-of-the-mill fundraisers. His plan worked as well, his Go Fund Me campaign went viral, and surpassed his own expectations.
Demetrios Hrysikos' goal was to raise $2000, that would help him insure the safety of Betty White, though mostly go to raise funds for the Spartanburg little theater in South Carolina. He has since passed his goal, and at the completion of this article has raised upwards of $2500. Mr. Hrysikos' posted an update on his campaign page thanking everyone that contributed to his fundraising en devour:
HELLO EVERYONE ! Wow, I've been busy at work for a while and opened my phone to this kinda going viral. Firstly, id like to thank everyone who has donated and shared so far. Thank you SO MUCH! Secondly I had no idea this would go so far but I'm happy it did. The idea came to me after news of Carrie fishers passing to try and put a smile back on some people faces and do some good! Other than liking to support our local arts and having a friend who works at the little theater I don't have any connection to it, I just thought it would be a good place for any money made to go. 2016 has taken so many great artists and SLT helps support and nurture new budding talent in our town. I'd like to think that Betty , Carrie, and Bowie would be happy with any proceeds going to that cause , which I assure you it WILL! This has been unexpected but let's make it a good thing ! We need new artists to carry the mantel of all the great ones we lost this year so keep sharing and donating to ensure a better 2017 for the arts.

Not only has Demetrios Hrysikos reached his goal, and will personally see to the protection of the lovely Betty White, but he has started a Twitter movement. Twitter users everywhere have popped up, advocating for the protection of Betty White. The following is a sampling of people pleading (or threatening) 2016 to spare the wonderful woman who brought the world so much joy:
There are literally hundreds of tweets just like the ones listed above, and each one has the same sentiment: protect Betty White at all cost! It is understandable that people are uneasy after the year we have had, and everyone is just trying to make it out of 2016 without any further tragedy.
With only a few more days to go in 2016, we can only hope and pray that we have seen the last of our beloved pop culture icons taken away from us. Demetrios Hrysikos has done has part, insuring the safety of Betty White - and also raising money for a good cause. On a lighter note, you might have noticed I took the liberty in posting tweets from Betty White's official Twitter account to show you how amazing she is, and why she has become so beloved by all. We love you Betty White, and we look forward to you entertaining the world for years to come!
