Game of Thrones has changed people's expectations of television productions forever. The distinction between big-budget cinematic blockbusters on the big screen has been transformed to the family couch as each new episode of #GameofThrones is earnestly streamed into our living rooms with excited anticipation. Striping back fantasy, the behind the scenes metamorphose that twists our reality into George R. R. Martin's reveals the skeleton that forms the basis for what we view on screen.
Seeing Is Believing
With episodes costing over $6 million burned sheep, Game of Thrones is by far in a league of its own. The exotic and diverse locations, army of support staff and endless amount of leather garments can only take the mystique so far — as these image will attest.
As you can see, the final product is a lot grander than the original. From one to many, the Queen's Unsullied Army definitely have more presence when displayed as a innumerable menace.
The same can be said for staring into the distance at an otherwise blue screen. Imagine Game of Thrones with the budget of a '70s Doctor Who episode — awesome, but tragic just the same.
You have to give credit where credit is due with this ice wall scene, as they are actually scaling a wall! True, they do have a little help with wires — and the wall is not as high or insurmountable — but it is a wall. There's no old-school crawling along the floor a la 1977 Spider-Man action with Game of Thrones.
Have A Bigger, Sneaky Look
The above collection of before and after Game of Throne effects is quite interesting to watch. Like anything these days, the augmented world we live in has expanded our perception of what is possible — something we often take for granted. There is no going back, and for Game of Thrones fanatics, bigger, bolder productions are now the status quo that fuels the fire of their insatiable need for more, myself included.
