Game of Thrones Season 7 is finally bringing together all of the characters whom we've come to love over the course of the show, and the great war is almost upon us. Cersei’s rule over the Seven Kingdoms is being challenged from all sides, and as a result, the fight over the Iron Throne will result in many casualties.
Tonight, we had a heartbreaking one.
Note: heavy spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 3, titled “The Queen’s Justice, follow.
Episode 3 gave fans the moment that we had been waiting for when Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen finally came face-to-face. While their budding alliance kept us elated, the episode took our breath away when the Matriarch of House Tyrell, Lady Olenna, was poisoned by Jamie Lannister — and even in the face of death, she was still a badass.
Since Olenna Tyrell has joined the numbered ranks of fallen Game of Thrones characters, we would like to reflect on her legacy, and celebrate one of the most influential characters on the show.
Remembering Lady Olenna Tyrell's Legacy
Lady Olenna Tyrell first appeared in Game of Thrones Season 3, and she stole the show from the moment she appeared. Also known as “The Queen of Thorns,” Lady Olenna was a master of politics and knew how to work behind the scenes. Although she appeared to be a helpless old woman, she was anything but; she was always the cleverest person in the room, and because of that, she was also the most dangerous.
All along, Lady Olenna has pulled just as many strings as Petyr Baelish. She helped to secure Margaery’s marriage to King Joffrey (and the Tyrells' place in the Seven Kingdoms). Most of Olenna’s greatest moments were exchanges between herself and other characters, such as Tywin Lannister, Cersei and Lord Varyrs.
Lady Olenna’s crowning moment came when she killed the most hated character in the early seasons of Game of Thrones, King Joffrey. While fans savored the death of one of the evilest characters on the show, they also reveled in the fact that Olenna’s plan was so perfect, that she was never found out. Her cunning was astonishing, and she successfully killed the king of Westeros without ever being suspected.
Even her death was fitting for her legendary status, and in her last moments, she told Jamie that she killed Joffery with a smile on her face. It’s true that we didn’t see her slip into the abyss, but we didn’t have to, because in the end, she won. She got inside Jamie’s head, planting a seed of distrust in him about Cersei, while also dropping the bombshell that she killed Joffrey.
