HBO has announced that Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season will arrive on Digital HD on September 25, and on Blu-ray and DVD later this year on December 12. While we still must wait until next year for the final chapter of the series, the Blu-Ray/DVD release has some great special features that will keep fans happy.

The Game of Thrones Season 7 Blu-Ray/DVD special features are as follows:

  • Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms This is the never-before-seen story of the tumultuous events that shaped the world of Westeros for thousands of years before the series begins. Cast members Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger), Conleth Hill (Varys), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) team up to narrate the animated telling of Aegon Targaryen's attempts to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, written by show writer Dave Hill.
  • From Imagination to Reality: Inside the Art Department Extensive two-part featurette detailing the astonishing work of production designer Deborah Riley and her art department, dissecting the process behind the creation of this season's incredible new sets, including Dragonstone, Casterly Rock, Highgarden, the Dragonpit and more.
  • Fire & Steel: Creating the Invasion of Westeros — Revisit the season's most pivotal moments with this behind-the-scenes featurette, including interviews with key cast and crew breaking down how fans' favorite moments were created.
  • Audio Commentaries — Commentaries on every episode with cast and crew including David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Jacob Anderson, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Kit Harington, Lena Headey and more.
  • Histories and Lore — Seven new animated pieces that give the history and background of notable Season 7 locations and storylines, including the Dragonpit, Highgarden, Prophecies of the Known World, the Rains of Castamere and more, all narrated by cast members including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aidan Gillen and Iain Glen (Blu-ray exclusive).
  • In-Episode Guides — In-feature resource providing background information about on-screen characters and locations (Blu-ray exclusive).

The Animated Untold History Of Westeros

All of the special features on the Game of Thrones Season 7 Blu-ray/DVD sound amazing, but the one that really stands out is "Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms." Fans will finally get to see the history of how Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros, which has never been told in the books or on the show.

As you can see in the preview above, the history of the House Targaryen is only the first chapter in the animated special, and it's narrated by Viserys Targaryen himself, Harry Lloyd. The video tells of the creation of Dragonstone, the Doom of Old Valeria, and the shape of Westeros before the Aegon the Conqueror descended upon it.

This one special feature will give fans a piece of valuable history in the Game of Thrones lore and serves as a nice treat to feast upon until Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres. Fans will no doubt be scrounging the special features for Easter eggs, but the history of Aegon Targaryen will surely be full of tons of information that fans have been dying to get their hands on.

This isn't the first animated history that Game of Thrones has included in the Blu-Ray/DVD releases, but this one might be the most informative given the shape of things at the end of Season 7. Hopefully, Game of Thrones Season 8 will premiere sooner rather than later, but in the meantime, HBO has given us some wonderful special features on the home video release that will keep fans happy for awhile.
