The highly anticipated seventh season of Game Of Thrones has been everything fans could've possibly hoped for. The hit HBO drama returned to screens last month after a year-long hiatus and viewers were excited to find out what came next for the residents of Westeros.
Unlike previous years, the storyline has been moving at a remarkable speed in Season 7. As such, we've been left on the edge of our seats on multiple occasions: from Daenerys's sweet revenge on the Lannister armies to Lady Olenna's bittersweet farewell, and how could we not mention last week's jaw-dropping episode that saw Daenerys lose one of her beloved dragons?
We knew that the season finale of #GameOfThrones would be action-packed, but we had no idea just how jaw-dropping it would be. As Queen Cersei met with Daenerys for the first time ever, the Stark sisters found a way to end their feud at Winterfell and Samwell Tarly arrived to discuss with Bran a crucial piece of information about Jon Snow. We've much to discuss so, without further ado, let's take a look back at the five biggest moments from the Game of Thrones Season 7 finale, "The Dragon and the Wolf."
Note: This post contains heavy spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 7.
1. Daenerys and Cersei Finally Meet
Season 7 of Game of Thrones has seen several significant first-time meetings, like Daenerys' first meeting with Jon Snow or the many rogue men of the series coming together, like Beric and the Hound meeting Gendry.
However, none of these significant encounters were as heated as the one in tonight's finale which saw current queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Cersei, come face to face with her rival, Daenerys. At first, Daenerys was absent, leaving Jon and Tyrion to do the bargaining on her behalf but it didn't take long for the Mother of Dragons to show up.
After Daenerys's arrival, Cersei was her usual stubborn self and refused to believe anything Jon and Tyrion had to say about the army of the dead. So, cleverly, Jon decided to show her something — the wight they had captured last week. As the Hound carried a box before the queen, he opened it to reveal the vicious undead creature. Cersei lost her steely expression and became visibly afraid as the wight headed straight for her but, thankfully, the Hound held it back.
2. Littlefinger Dies
Littlefinger wasted no time in plotting against Arya, as he tried to convince Sansa to kill her sister for the sake of the North. Sansa appeared to agree with him, summoning Arya to the great hall for a trial. However, the two Stark sisters turned the tables, calling Littlefinger out on all of his betrayals — he had been played at his own game. Baelish was in shock and pleaded with the Lords of the Vale to help him out.
Unfortunately for him, his number was up and Sansa gave Arya the signal. The youngest Stark girl headed over to Littlefinger and cut his throat, leaving him to bleed out on the floor. Farewell Littlefinger, we would say we'd miss you but we'd be lying.
3. Jon Snow's Heritage Is Revealed
Samwell Tarly arrived in Winterfell and was pleased to see Bran. As the two men got reacquainted, Bran told Sam that Jon was on his way back to Winterfell with Daenerys Targaryen. Bran, calling himself the Three-Eyed Raven, then proceeded to tell Sam that he knows who Jon's real parents are, revealing them to be Lyanna Stark and — wait for it —Rhaegar Targaryen.
The youngest living Stark son continued, telling Sam that Jon is still a bastard, but a Dornish one. However, Sam was in shock and revealed the information he'd learned while at the Citadel: Rhaegar and Lyanna had actually married, something that Bran was then able to then see in a vision. This confirms it: Jon is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
4. Daenerys and Jon Make Love
Despite the fact that Daenerys and Jon had never met before this season, many viewers have been not-so-secretly shipping the two characters as a couple. After a season of disagreements and uneasy navigation of their new relationship, Daenerys proved her worth to Jon last week when she rode her dragons into battle to save the King in the North. As a result, Jon metaphorically bended the knee, pledging his allegiance to Daenerys and her claim to the Iron Throne.
After their romantic moment in last week's installment, fans were preparing for the pair to finally admit their feelings for each other and that certainly happened in tonight's season finale. Towards the end of the episode, Daenerys and Jon had sex, just as his true lineage was revealed.
5. The Wights Take Down The Wall
Last week's episode saw the villainous Night King kill the dragon Viserion, with the leader of the undead later reanimating the dragon and giving himself a deadly weapon. We knew it was only a matter of time but tonight, with Viserion's help, the Night King and his army of wights took down the wall, allowing the army to head straight into the heart of Westeros and beyond. It was an awesome, albeit chilling, moment. Unfortunately, the jury is still out on whether Tormund and Beric have survived the attack. We've been saying it all season but now we know for sure: Winter is finally here.
We haven't quite come to terms with the fact that Game Of Thrones will be off our screens for the better part of a year and that jaw-dropping season finale has certainly left us craving more episodes of this drama. With the Night King leading his army directly into the heart of Westeros, it's looking like Jon, Daenerys and her dragons will be called into action to fight on behalf of all the living citizens of the country. We're excited to see that, that's for sure, but for now, our watch is ended.
