In Game of Thrones, Lord Greatjon Umber is no stranger to losing body parts. As you might remember, the Stark bannerman lost a couple of fingers courtesy of Robb's direwolf for daring to question the King of the North. For , the actor who played Greatjon, fiction may have just come uncomfortably close to reality. BBC News has confirmed that Mantle's ear was partially bitten off in a hotel ruckus.
This time a direwolf wasn't responsible, although something equally fearsome was: An English northerner. Mantle, 55, was staying at the Newcastle Travelodge when a 32-year-old man attacked him and did a "bit of a Mike Tyson" on his right ear.
The man, who was arrested by police, has been charged with wounding with intent, and will appear in a UK court next month. Luckily, Mantle was able to find the piece of his ear and have it reattached by surgeons at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. His agent stated:
He is very shaken and shocked by what has happened, you don't expect this kind of thing to happen in a hotel. The part of the ear that was bitten off was found and sewn back on. Mr Mantle said the police, ambulance and hospital staff were amazing.
The accident, which took place early on Sunday, occurred after Mantle had asked fellow lodgers to keep the noise down. Two other men were reportedly involved in attack, in which Mantle was apparently pinned to the ground. One man has been released on bail, while another has been released without charge. The police investigation is currently on-going.
Mantle has just finished performing a stint in The Ladykillers at the Theatre Royal. He has due to begin touring with the company, although it's currently unclear if he'll be able to rejoin the cast.
Unfortunately, despite his standout performance in Season 1 of Game of Thrones, Mantle was unable to return for Season 2, and was not invited to come back for Season 3. Regardless it's not outside the realms of possibility that he might one day return as Greatjon. But what do you think? Do you want to see Greatjon again, or has it been too long?
