Rupert Sanders will direct the remake of Mamoru Oshi’s cult anime Ghost in the Shell.

If you didn’t know that there actually was a remake Ghost in the Shell in the works, don’t worry: neither did we.

But Dreamworks apparently bought the rights years ago, and none other than Steven Spielberg championed a remake of the animated sci-fi thriller which centers on a female cyborg cop on the trail of a mysterious hacker.

The original Ghost in the Shell was based on Masamune Shirow’s manga of the same name. It spawned several TV shows and video games.

While I find the fact that there actually will be a remake of Ghost in the Shell oddly appealing (I am a sucker for dystopian sci-fi and cyberpunk IF done right), Rupert Sanders seems like a... controversial choice.

Snow White and the Huntsman wasn’t exactly bad, but also hardly something to get terribly excited about.

Then again the fantasy flick was drenched in moodiness and exuded an interestingly morbid atmosphere. The dystopian future of Ghost in the Shell certainly demands a director who can do moody.

Do you think Sanders the right man? Who else would like directing Ghost in the Shell? Tell us below!
