is a very different pedigree of Hollywood beast. He always straddles the line of insanity and brilliance. Even his new turn as caveman Grug in The Croods received positive reviews and $400 million worldwide at the box office. As such, it was just announced that The Croods 2 is happening. Still, his real life persona is even more animated than the overprotective dad who never wants his kids to leave the cave.

After all, he once did mushrooms with his cat. He also has a pet octopus. Let's not forget that he named his son after his favorite superhero. And yes, he casually spews out sentences like, "I opened my eyes and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket eating a Fudgesicle in front of my bed." It's all best summed up in YouTube montages like this.

He's erratic. He's off his rocker. He's absurd.

As such, we've decided to take a look at Cage's craziest roles, thanks to the power of GIFs and our very scientific "Insanity Scale." Don't worry, Cage fans. We're only poking fun and will be taking a look at Cage's solid performances next week.

Without further ado, I present THE NICOLAS CAGE INSANITY SCALE:

Movie: Ghost Rider

Scene: This skull is on fire.

Movie: Deadfall

Scene: A distaste for wire hangers that rivals Joan Crawford.

Movie: The Wicker Man

Scene: Punching a lady. As a bear.

AND

Scene: "The Bees!"

Movie: Vampire's Kiss

Scene: Everything. This movie is insane.

Things haven't always been good for Nicolas Cage. His meaty roles sometimes begin to smell like ham because of insane performances like these. But let's not get caught up in all the hype and endless meme fodder. This guy has done some awesome stuff. Again, that's why we're going to revel in the accolades he deserves next week. We'll salute the side that people seem to forget: The gifted one.
