With the Gilmore Girls revival almost upon us, it won't be long before fans of Rory Gilmore's three former boyfriends proclaim that their favorite was undoubtedly the best choice for her. And with confirmation that all three are returning for Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, it's sure going to be fun to see which of the three Rory reconnects with.
However, being an avid fan of the show, I have no problem admitting that out of all of them, it was her first love Dean who was easily the best choice for her. Jared Padalecki may have spent his days hunting demons as Sam Winchester on #Supernatural in the years since his stint on Gilmore Girls, but he will return to Stars Hollow as Dean Forester in A Year In The Life. But the question is, is he back for Rory?
Check out why we should all show Rory's first love some respect, and why Dean was easily the best out of all three of Rory's boyfriends.
He Was Actually A Nice Guy
Out of her three boyfriends, nobody showed Rory more respect that Dean did. From their early days together right through to their hookups later down the line, Dean always made sure that he took great care of Rory. Even when they were no longer together and he was married to someone else, he still made time for her when she broke down.
The "nice guy" character often gets a bad rap for being "too boring" or "clingy" — this is not only an inaccurate description of Dean, it's unfair to all the nice guys out there. While the "bad boy" Jess Mariano may have won over many (including me by the end of the series), it doesn't change the fact that he was often disrespectful, rude and downright ignorant towards Rory and her mother. That's not cool, and it's something that Dean would have never done.
Now, don't get me wrong, Dean wasn't perfect — I remember when he got mad at Rory for spending more time on her Chilton activities than with him — but you have to remember, they were young and he apologized for it.
I know that a lot of people claim that he was too small-minded in terms of goals, careers and traveling. However, that doesn't change the fact that Dean always treated Rory with care and compassion. Despite their differences, he always respected her long-term goals — something he made very clear when he was questioned by Richard in Season 2.

He Became Part Of The Family
Dean didn't just win Rory's heart, he managed to win over Lorelai as well, quickly becoming the only real Gilmore Guy on the show. After Lorelai invited him over to their house, Dean ended up watching Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory with them. Despite her initial hesitation, Lorelai made herself scarce and allowed Dean and Rory to enjoy what turned out to be their first date alone.
What happened here was actually pretty amazing, because Dean didn't just enjoy a successful first date with Rory, he was officially welcomed into the Gilmore clan — something Lorelai certainly never thought she would have been doing earlier that day. Furthermore, Dean is the only real boyfriend of Rory's that Lorelai was really sold on. While she eventually grew warmer towards Jess and Logan, she never really clicked with them all that well. The reason she got Dean was because Dean got them, and all of their "Gilmore-isms".
He Was Always There For Her
When it came to reliability and dependability, you could always count on Dean. If Rory needed him, he was there. No matter what your opinion of the character was, there is absolutely no taking that away from him.
Dean had absolutely no issue coming along to book sales, school dances, and even the infamous Friday night dinners at the Gilmore grandparents' house — oh, and there was also that time he offered to sit and watch Rory browse the book selection on Amazon. Yes, he was that good. Moreover, despite feeling somewhat out of place, he even accompanied Rory to her high school dance because she asked him to. He never made a fuss or attempted to get out it. When it came to Rory, there's no doubt about it: Dean Forester was the perfect gentleman.
With Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life ready to take us back to the world of Stars Hollow, it's time for Rory Gilmore to revisit her old relationships. And among them is her sorely underrated first love Dean. A regular Stars Hollow face for the first 5 seasons of Gilmore Girls, Dean had no issue making time for Rory, spending time with her family and was always there for her. That is only part of what makes Dean Forester Rory's best former boyfriend.
