The #GothamCitySirens movie was officially announced, and no one has stopped talking. A central part of the conversation is whether Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's relationship will be depicted. Also, as all of Sirens' members are part of the LGBT spectrum, will they be represented as queer women in general? I believe that the #DCEU and Warner Bros. need to take this step, as #LGBT representation in film is nearing absence.
#DC is well-known for having an abundance of LGBT characters and portraying them terrifically in comics. TV shows such as #Supergirl have depicted positive and relatable stories as well. It is only natural that mainstream movies would be next to include and transcend this — and Gotham City Sirens would be the perfect start.

It Could Make Or Break The Film
#HarleyQuinn and Poison Ivy had an instant connection, and their attraction to each other was more than obvious. Last year, DC finally confirmed their relationship. Longtime shippers of the couple would be disappointed, to say the least, if their romance doesn't make it into Gotham City Sirens. Their story is highly adored, and it is not worth betraying the fans who made it popular to begin with.
It is important to note that no one's sexuality completely defines who they are. Gotham City Sirens is foremost, a comic book movie. The leading ladies will embark on their own adventures, as they do in the comics. They don't rely on whom they're attracted to in order to make their stories interesting. Let's go back to Catwoman's previous New 52 solo series. Her bisexuality was introduced in Catwoman #39. Though not a main plot, it was still inspiring and praised by readers. Including these characters' sexualities is critical, because it will stay true to what is part of them.
Empowering For Audiences
Harley, Ivy and Selina are empowering to their fans. Not only are they badass, nothing stops them from being free and embracing who they are. If you ask me, that's extremely admirable. Portraying strong and fearless queer women in the Sirens film could give hope to viewers, which all LGBT people deserve to experience.
Why Is Representation So Important?
There are so many different kinds of people in our world, and that will never change. In media, everyone deserves to be represented, as it will prevent viewers from feeling alone. In Gotham City Sirens, incorporating only a slight intimation of the characters' sexualities can be damaging, as that will only make queer people in entertainment more inconspicuous. More representation can bring forth normalization. But most importantly, it can lead to acceptance. Comics have reflected their readers tremendously. Now, it's time for movies to reflect their viewers. Only time will tell if Gotham City Sirens will embrace this. All we need to do as fans is keep the conversation going.
