During the finale of Gotham Season 3 we saw Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Ivy Pepper (Maggie Geha) examining a series of rough sketches. It's then revealed to us that this scene is the duo choosing the logo for Oswald's new club the Iceberg Lounge.
In the comics, the Iceberg Lounge becomes the base of operations for Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a the #Penguin. Although Gotham doesn't always follow the plots of the source material, it feels like this is a moment when the Fox series will faithfully realign with the comics.
Social Media Reveals All
Judging by the caption of the below picture on executive producer Danny Cannon's Instagram page, the production team began scouting for locations in early June, with Cannon also posting that "Season 4 will commence shooting late June." Further scrolling through Cannon's Instagram will reveal various behind-the-scenes photos of ominous and cool-looking locations and actors, including Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue, dating from mid-June.
It's also during these past few weeks that the photos of the #IcebergLounge emerged, suggesting that when Season 4 rolls around, we're going to jump straight into that setting as opposed to seeing it being constructed throughout the series. This is a major element of the show that's going to give us fans all the comic book vibes, with Oswald's already-established base of operations fully realized and operational.
The first photo we were given was this one, taken by cinematographer Crescenzo G.P. Notarile and posted to his Twitter account:
In this snap we see what looks suspiciously like Oswald's office. While there is no definitive indication that this is the Iceberg Lounge, it's the little details that scream what it is.
The crystal-like sculptures bookending the desk, the window behind the throne, even the silver filigree on the desk look like they could be carved from ice.
From this picture alone we can already begin to see a black-and-blue color scheme. If you look to the right of the picture, there's a subtle green light emanating through the ice sculpture onto the desk. It makes the detail preoccupied among us wonder what the lighting will be like in the new season and if the lights in what we can assume is Oswald's office are different to the lighting throughout the rest of the club.
Also, it's interesting to note that both the desk and the chair are massive. If it is indeed Oswald's HQ, he is going to look small in this setting. However, with lighting and clever camera angles, the sizing of the furniture could show off Oswald's newfound power and make him look bigger and more menacing than his diminutive stature suggests.
The Throne Room
Then there's this image that was posted to Instagram courtesy of fledgling actor Adam DeCarlo and New York's Steiner Studios. Judging by the hashtags, we get confirmation that it is indeed part of the Iceberg Lounge:
We also get a fresh angle. We see that the desk is glossy and reflective, much like onyx, and also looks much bigger than in Notarile's image.
I'm curious to see if we get more photos of this room or if it's going to be saved for the show. If it's the latter, then hopefully that means there's going to be different elements that are even more impressive to experience when we watch the new season.
I Can Stand Under Your Umbrella
The next photo was posted on June 26 by Danny Cannon on Instagram:
Here we see the familiar umbrella logo that Oswald has sported throughout the series, but instead of the usual purple, this one is blue, which fits with the blue-and-black theme that keeps popping up. Once again we have an icy-looking background.
Now, we know from the finale of Season 3 that Oswald and Ivy were examining what we can speculate were logos, so the umbrella isn't likely to be the official symbol of the club. However, we do know it's Oswald's symbol, so it could easily be in his office, while the drawings we saw could contain the club's logo.
We can also assume that the drawing is supposed to be the logo as opposed to, say, a sketching of the nightclub's building, because on other pieces of paper we see drawings like this one circled below:
We still haven't seen photos of the drawing brought to life, but it's most likely going to be in the same blue-and-black colors. I'm hoping production doesn't spoil it for us until nearer the Season 4 premiere and that it's in some kind of teaser rather than posted to social media.
So far, we haven't had much information about the Iceberg Lounge, but there's already a few things we can assume:
- We know from the Season 3 finale that Oswald is planning to display frozen Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) somewhere in the club.
- The Iceberg Lounge is most likely going to be established when we return, or at the very least we're going to enter on its grand opening.
- Whether or not Oswald has got his reputation back, it certainly seems like he's at the top of his game again.
- The club is going to follow the sophisticated vibe that we got from other clubs in the series, including Mooney's Nightclub, Oswald's and The Sirens.
#Gotham has only just kicked off filming for Season 4 and there's already so many behind-the-scenes photos that have been released. This might be just a small taste of what to expect of Oswald's new club, but hopefully production doesn't give too much away.
Season 4 of Gotham premieres on September 28 on Fox. What do you think these images represent? Share your theories and predictions in the comments below.
