Twilight may be legitimately horrifying in certain ways, but it obviously was never able to please fans of real vampires. Thanks to visionary filmmaker , we'll be getting tried-and-true bloodsuckers on FX with a 13-episode first season order based on his novel with Chuck Hogan, The Strain.

Del Toro actually co-wrote and directed the pilot, which means that we should be getting something pretty close to his initial vision. If you've never read the book, here's a synopsis from Variety:

“The Strain” is billed as a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The fact that FX will have both this and American Horror Story means that I'm a happy camper. But I'll also fully admit that I'm in denial about leaving AHS after next season. The Strain will reportedly include a cast of , Mia Maestro, , and . The show will premiere in July 2014 on FX.
