From the initial trailer, it appears that both Thor and his hammer, Mjolnir, are gonna get their butts kicked in #ThorRagnarok. But while Thor's weapon of choice might be pretty badass (when Hela isn't shattering it), it certainly isn't the only famous hammer in the history of cinema.
The hammer has been a weapon of choice in horror movies, action flicks...even films with animated rabbits and live action humans. And nine times out of ten, it gets pretty damn gory, something we can be pretty certain we won't see in the #MCU version. Which leads me to this very important warning:
*Warning: Violence below! All the way from fun comedic violence to NSFW NC-17 your-mama-warned-you-about-this violence. Proceed with caution! This is not a drill! Because...well, it's about hammers.*
That being said, here are 11 movies that use a hammer for so, so much more than carpentry (and calling down lightning).
1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Let's start this off nice and easy, with some cartoon violence. Bob Hoskins' Eddie Valiant nails Christopher Lloyd's Judge Doom with a hammer/boxing glove...thing.
2. Casino (1995)
Why waste time getting to the good gore? Check out this finger-smashing good time, and think twice next time you want to cheat in a casino. If you don't like watching a hand get smashed to bits, you might want to skip this one.
3. Django Unchained (2012)
The hammer is merely used as a persuasion here, but #LeonardoDiCaprio's Calvin Candie hammers his point home very well.
4. Misery (1990)
#KathyBates, a sledgehammer, and an obsession. Need I say more? See number two above for the gore warning, only this time, it's the feet that get hammered. And it shows one of them. So nasty.
5. Oldboy (2003)
Check out this fight scene in the original, not the more limp American remake. Midway through his quest for revenge, Oh Dae-Su pulls some teeth with his hammer before obliterating an entire mob of bad guys with the same tool.
6. Drive (2011)
You'll never look at The Notebook the same way again after seeing #RyanGosling smash some guy's hands, then threaten to put a nail through his forehead. Steer clear of this one also if you have a weak stomach.
7. Blade II (2002)
The list is over halfway through and heading into the homestretch, so let's start toning it down a bit. The hammer in this scene doesn't quite do its job, but it's still a pretty sweet weapon.
8. Beetlejuice (1988)
1988 was a good year for comedy violence with hammers. This time, instead of a cartoon hammer, Beetlejuice is wearing this funky carnival outfit, complete with hammer hands.
9. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)
Hasbian? HA. Anyway, Scott's lady pulls a huge hammer out of her sack to fight her ex-lady lover. It was just a phase!
10. Kill List (2011)
And just like that, we're back at it with the warnings. This one...this is over the top. It's so bad, I'll explain it to you first. There's a hammer to the knees, hands, fingers, and finally, to the head. I feel almost bad for including it...it's really that bad.
Proceed with caution on this one.
11. Iron Man 2 (2010)
Just kidding. Justin Hammer sucks. But here's the scene where Iron Man and War Machine kick a Hammer's ass!
That's enough of that fun! Read more on Thor: Ragnarok, out in theaters this November!
