Now, I should prematurely add that movie synopses very rarely sound good in the cold hard light of day. Imagine someone tried to tell you the storyline to The Matrix within a tweet sized sound-bite. It would just be awful and make hardly any sense. I hope that's the case with 's next upcoming movie, Tomorrowland.
The director of The Incredibles and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol hasn't said much about the enigmatically named Tomorrowland. We knew the Damon Lindelof penned flick would star and , but beyond that we were blank. That is until now.
Drew McWeeny over at HitFix has got hold of an official Disney logline used for casting purposes. According to this, the film follows:
...a teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth.
Even if we try to ignore how robots could possibly be 'pre-pubescent', it's not the best sounding synopsis ever. But, like I said above, these things rarely sound great on paper. If we investigate a bit further, things start to unravel.
The film will reportedly follow two storylines, one of which concerns Frank Walker (the "genius middle-aged man") when he was only eleven. He meets a budding inventor named David Nix (whose older version will be played by Laurie) at the 1964 World’s Fair. While at the fair a young girl robot called Athena somehow brings him into the alternate dimension of Tomorrowland, which is apparently a "place where science has blown past the world we live in."
However, Walker is thrown out of Tomorrowland after seeing only a glimpse of this other world. Now, the film flashforwards to the present day, where an older Walker (Clooney) is trying to track down Tomorrowland's corrupt ruler, played by Laurie. In order to achieve this, he solicits the help of a smart, young girl named Casey. How the story continues from here is unknown, but it'll probably get even more convoluted. How is Tomorrowland threatening Earth? How can Walker return there? I don't know. We're going to have to wait for Tomorrowland's December 19, 2014 release date for the full kibosh.
