Avengers: Infinity War will be the culmination of everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe has established; everything has led to this movie. Thanos will be knocking on Earth’s door and in order for the Avengers to stop him, they will have to make some necessary sacrifices that may or may not involve their own locks of hair.
The latest Avenger to sport a new look is none other than Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye. Check out #JeremyRenner’s Instagram post below:
Hawkeye appears to be showing off a mohawk and it looks fantastic. I mean, how could a guy named #Hawkeye not wear a mohawk?
It’s interesting to see how the MCU continues to stay true to the version of the character it's brought to the big screen. In the comics, Barton normally wears a mask, complete with a purple outfit, while the movies have left off his mask and changed the costume design but kept the purple.
Barton is the most recent Avenger to promote a new hairstyle, but, of course, he isn't the only one. In #ThorRagnarok, Thor has already famously chopped his locks and grown a beard, reminiscent of his look in the Unworthy Thor storyline from the comics, which makes sense, as, just like in that story, he'll be losing Mjölnir.
Likewise, the promo material for #InfinityWar has already revealed that a few of our favorite Avengers have drastically altered themselves. Now that he's no longer the Captain, Steve Rogers has eschewed his clean-shaven military look and will be rocking a full beard. Meanwhile, Natasha Romanoff has changed her famous fiery locks to a cool platinum blonde.
Why All The New Looks For These MCU Characters?
One major aspect I really admire from this cinematic universe is that Marvel has played it safe with the characters appearance from the comics. While the majority of them may not exactly look like their comic book equivalent, Marvel has done a phenomenal job making sure these characters don't look too cartoony. Likewise, I believe there’s actually a practical reason that most of these characters have changed their looks in the aftermath of #CaptainAmericaCivilWar.
The conclusion of that movie saw some of our favorite characters go into hiding after refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords and becoming enemies of the state. Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton, to name a few, have gone underground, but being as careful and self-sufficient as they are, you'd expect them to alter their appearances, as well. After all, it's unreasonable to think they'd never have to go out into the world and be in public.
There's also another, somewhat more cynical reason they might all be going around with altered appearances. In the comics, Steve Rogers formed the Secret Avengers, a clandestine, black ops Avengers team that could operate with more freedom than the public-facing, government-acknowledged Avengers team. Steve's letter to Tony at the end of Civil War seemed to set up a version of this dynamic in the #MCU: Steve has his team underground, but if Tony Stark ever needs their help, all he has to do is call. It's not crazy to think that with the threat of Thanos looming, Tony would want to get the gang back together. But, knowing that the public still considers Steve and his team to be—as Spider-Man: Homecoming pointed out—war criminals. So the different looks are meant to keep the public from realizing Steve and his team are once again working with the visible Avengers. After all, a public uproar is the last thing the Avengers or the world needs when faced with the threat of Thanos.
What other heroes do you believe will be sporting a new looking in Avengers: Infinity War?
