HBO has already dominated the fantasy and gangster genres, and now they look like they've set their sights on sci-fi. According to Deadline, HBO have just signed up Last Resort and Oblivion writer Karl Gajdusek to pen a new project entitled The Spark.

The series, which has already started preliminary development, is set in a near future world which is undergoing another technological/industrial revolution. Suddenly a signal from outside of the solar system arrives and humanity is thrown into spiritual, scientific and philosophical quandaries. Humanity is still unable reach the signal, but proof we are not alone in the universe spurs on efforts to discover its origins. The series will follow a female protagonist as she works with Earth's scientific agencies to do just that. Gajdusek is writing and executive producing the series, which he claims will explore the 'five pillars' of sci-fi: Alien Contact, Artificial Intelligence, Technological breakthroughs, Space Exploration/Adventure, and Origin Stories.

The idea certainly seems intriguing, but at the moment it sounds extremely like Contact starring . But to be honest, this isn't a completely terrible thing. Although Contact was by no means perfect, I did really enjoy the chilling moment the alien signal is first received, and the social issues that arose from it. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for The Spark.

What do you think? Could this be HBO's next Game of Thrones? Let us know below.
