Variety is reporting that HBO has given a pilot production commitment to remake sci-fi cult classic Westworld, with tapped to write and direct.

Nolan, brother of Dark Knight Rises helmer , has written the pilot episode with his wife . He will also direct the show that HBO is calling “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin." will executive produce under his Bad Robot banner along with .

Westworld debuted back in 1973 and was written and directed by . The movie is set on a remote resort island where, for a hefty fee, one can indulge in one's wildest fantasies, be it the pleasures of Ancient Rome, the chivalry of the Middle Ages or the lawlessness of the Wild West. Yul Brynner starred as a robot gunslinger, but as is the norm with these sorts of arrangements, the robots break bad and start to terrorize the vacationers. Imagine a sort of Terminator-meets-Jurassic Park and you get the idea.

Nolan has a fantastic writing pedigree so I'm really intrigued to see what he can do with Westworld. The movie might be 40 years old but the themes of artificial intelligence, the search for personal pleasure and the unrelenting march of technological advancement still resonate today. Factor in HBO and their history of producing groundbreaking TV shows, and when it comes to the Westworld remake surely nothing can go wrong... go wrong... go wrong... go wrong...
