had been sitting comfortably at the top of the box office since its release in December, but this week, it's finally been knocked down from its No. 1 spot thanks to the three brilliant black women that launched a man into outer space.

Despite predictions that would bring in between $16 and $18 million in its opening weekend, the film has raked in a substantial $22.8 million, leaving Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in second place with $22.1 million. The Fox drama-comedy has already surpassed its modest budget of $25 million.

Hidden Figures has been well received by critics and audiences alike, earning Octavia Spencer a nom, in addition to the Best Score nod for Pharrel Williams. Currently, the film is being considered for a for Best Adapted Screenplay.

tells the story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), who worked for NASA during the Space Race in the early '60s. Thanks to their work, especially that of mathematician Katherine Johnson, the US was able to launch astronaut John Glenn into space, where he successfully orbited the Earth before returning safely home.
