After the substantial box office success of 2011's Horrible Bosses, it was a cinch that we'd be getting a sequel. Director further proved to be an asset for big studio comedy when his followup film Identity Thief made an absolute killing. Unfortunately for New Line, Deadline is reporting that Gordon will not be returning to helm Horrible Bosses 2. Scheduling conflicts are apparently to blame as Gordon is currently developing the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. New Line is purportedly engaged in an active search for a replacement.

I'm actually happy to hear this. Seth Gordon found himself favorably on my radar in 2007 with the excellent videogame documentary The King of Kong, and followed that up with some great television work on The Office and Community. Then came Horrible Bosses, which I thought was ok. But then he helmed Identity Thief which, for all its box office bank, was such an awful movie as to insult basic intelligence. The fact that Gordon is not coming back to direct a studio comedy sequel, which don't have a great track record as far as quality is concerned, is probably the best thing he could do right now.
