When a trailer contains the words "guys, they shot a gorilla," you know you ain't about to watch The Jungle Book, and the latest horror film from YouTubers Friend Dog Studios is an ode to the year that has been. 2016 may have been a great year for the horror genre as the likes of Hush, Don't Breathe, and Holidays have kept us hiding behind the sofa, but what if 2016 had actually been a horror film itself?

The faux trailer, aptly titled 2016, tracks through the encyclopedia of celebrity deaths, exploding phones, presidential elections, and Britain's Brexit blunder. The brainchild of amateur filmmakers Brian Huther, Ben Auxier and Seth Macchi, the film starts on December 31, 2015 as we look forward to another round of "new year, new me." Little do those in the film (or us for that matter) know that the horror was just beginning.

There is a Cloverfield-style filming on a video camera, before the trailer goes into full slasher mode in a nod to the horror films of yesteryear. We hear an ominous voice saying, "Do you know who died today?" which we can only assume would be the tagline of the film. We also see a Se7en-esque map on the wall as the friends try and link the seemingly random celebrity deaths that have hit us. Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, Prince, David Bowie and Muhammad Ali all get their own tributes, and even though it happened just days ago, you can hear "we lost Leia."

The Horrors Continue

If all the celebrity sadness wasn't enough of a kick to the crotch, the trailer also reminds us of the other "strange" goings on from this year as we hear:

"I'm noticing it here too. It's like things you'd never expect are happening everywhere."

Like some Jason Voorhees supernatural killer, 2016 from the trailer is not of this world and our heroine tells us that the evil stalking them isn't a what, it is a when. We see their friends frozen in some horrific mannequin challenge, we are told that England (it should actually be Great Britain) has left Europe, and there is a reminder of Trump's p*ssy grabbing debacle. Even the old horror trope of calling for help gets a send-up, as an exploding phone makes escape impossible — oh, of course, it's a Samsung.

2017... The Sequel?

It is all neatly wrapped up with a chilling "creepy child" rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" that you won't be able to shift from your mind — and a Trump-masked killer not too dissimilar to the The Purge: Election Year. The voice-over goes full Jigsaw for the final goodbye:

"You think this is over? We're just getting started!"

It is a funny reminder of how awful 2016 has actually been, but don't worry, it is nearly all over. I don't know about you, but I kind of want to see the rest of it? Also, spoilers, how will it end? Expect some wicked twist where 2016's older sibling 2017 comes in to finish off what the first killer started. Coming soon to a theater near you!
