Admittedly, this isn't the first time that we have been exposed to a monster of such epic proportions, especially if the 1933, 1976, 1985 and 2005 movies are anything to go by. However, this version of Kong is deemed to be the largest ever by far. Before you find out what this actually means, take a moment to run through the enormous ape's history in Movie Pilot's neat video below:
With Kong: Skull Island hitting the big screens, it's clear that the King of the Monsters will be the biggest yet. But, the question still remains — how tall really is King Kong?
How Tall Is King Kong?
Well, to cut a long story short, Kong: Skull Island director Jordon Vogt-Roberts has already revealed that the giant ape will be 100 feet tall. In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, he said:
"This is going to be the biggest Kong there's ever been. Not 10 foot or 30 foot, but a 100-foot ape."
Following on from Peter Jackson's King Kong outing, it's apparent that Vogt-Roberts wanted to make his version the most impressive it can be. Comparatively, most of the previous apes stood at around 50 ft and standing at just 25 ft — 2005's offering was far closer to resembling an unusually large silverback gorilla:
For reference, here are the heights of all previous King Kongs:
- 1933's King Kong — 24 ft tall
- 1976's King Kong — 55 ft tall
- 1985's King Kong Lives — 60 ft tall
- 2005's King Kong — 25 ft tall
Aside from utilizing CGI effects to their fullest and giving the MonsterVerse fans a 100 ft behemoth to goggle at in Skull Island, Kong's new height may also be to do with the fact that he'll eventually have to battle Godzilla — a super monster that stands at a dizzying height of over 350 ft. In 2016's Godzilla: Resurgence, the monster was actually 387 ft and 2020's feature will see his height extend to even further into the skies, making him the toughest opponent ever faced by the ape. As a comparison, here's an awesome graph documenting Godzilla's height through the decades:
So, even if you think King Kong will be standing pretty tall in 2017's Kong: Skull Island, keep it firmly in mind that he's still a few hundred ft smaller than the giant nuclear lizard in his next cinematic outing.
Kong: Skull Island will see theatrical release in the United States on March 10, 2017
