The Flash may be returning for its highly-anticipated fourth season, but unfortunately one Team Flash member won't be coming back to Central City. Tom Felton, who portrayed Julian Albert on the show's third season, will not be returning as a series regular for Season 4. In fact, he may not be returning at all as Felton has yet to book any form of a return to the show.

While it's not unusual for former regulars to return on a recurring basis — Supergirl actresses Calista Flockhart and Floriana Lima departed as series regulars but they will continue to be featured in recurring roles — that doesn't seem to be the case for Felton, who has seemingly departed The Flash altogether.

While his absence doesn't necessarily mean that we have seen the last of Julian in Central City — if Felton's schedule opens up, you can bet he'll be back — it does mean that he won't be on our screens for the foreseeable. And that is definitely unfortunate.

From his alter-ego as Dr. Alchemy to his relationship with Caitlin Snow, it's undeniable that Julian had a major impact on Season 3. Thus, let's take a look at how the show will move forward and deal with his absence in the upcoming season.

How Will Julian's Absence Impact The Show?

Julian Albert was a creation of the Flashpoint timeline and began the season as an antagonistic CSI lab partner for Barry Allen. But the character would undergo quite a lot of development throughout the season, ending up as a fully fledged member of Team Flash. Because of this it seemed like he was set to continue on into Season 4, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Of course, the most important aspect of Julian's introduction was his alter-ego, Dr. Alchemy. The character's consistent blackouts allowed his subconscious to take over, resulting in the villainous Dr. Alchemy taking charge and helping the season's Big Bad, Savitar. With the help of Team Flash, Julian managed to overcome his dark side, and tried to help Caitlin do the same with Killer Frost.

While his love wasn't enough to stop Caitlin transforming into Frost, the Season 3 finale gave us some hope that she would resurface eventually. Furthermore, as Julian watched Barry disappear into the Speed Force, it seemed like he would stick around to help. But unfortunately for them, he won't be.

His absence will undoubtedly be felt by Team Flash, who are already two members down. Without their leader in Barry as well as the brainy Caitlin, losing Julian will definitely be another blow for the team. Remember, it was Julian who stepped in to replace Caitlin after she went rogue. Thus, the team always had a medically experienced member. Without Julian now to fill her role, we should expect the Killer Frost/Caitlin hybrid to temporarily step back in to help.

Can 'The Flash' Survive Without Him?

Without a doubt, Julian Albert had a major impact on the show. From his Flashpoint arrival to his bitter rivalry with Barry Allen, the character instantly made an impact on The Flash. But it was his overcoming of his evil alter-ego and love for Caitlin that made him a fan-favorite character. Amidst all the spiteful comments and underhanded jibes, Julian was good-hearted individual who would stop at nothing to protect those he cared for. And he will undoubtedly be missed on the show.

But given that Julian was a product of Flashpoint, an event which ended up receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics, perhaps his departure will help the show distance itself from Season 3. The Flash produced two incredibly strong seasons before Julian's arrival, and I have no doubt that it will give us another.

Having said all that, it is definitely sad to see Tom Felton leave. The actor may be best known for his role of Draco Malfoy in the franchise, but he added a great deal to The Flash as Julian Albert and his presence will be missed during Season 4.
