The internet has been kind of crazy lately with casting rumors, whether confirmed ( as Batman) or denied-but-still-possible ( as Lex Luthor) to downright untrue ( as Ant-Man).
But a huge bombshell is reportedly about to be dropped on our heads regarding the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. There have been some rumors swirling around the industry for the past few days that Disney/LucasFilms are set to make a big announcement about an A-list addition to their cast. Ready for it?
The surprising news was first reported by Film Chronicles, which doesn't tend to be the jumping the gun, unreliable sort of source. And it makes sense: Cumberbatch has a close working relationship with Star Wars 7 director , and a recent report surfaced that Cumberbatch had decided to pull out of 's upcoming Crimson Peak, due to unspecified reasons. But a quick search tells us that Crimson Peak and Star Wars 7 are set to film at the same time.
And let's be honest, an actor would have to have a damned good reason to pass on the opportunity to work with del Toro, one of the hottest directors around right now. A damned good reason like, say...it being a childhood dream, as he revealed in an interview last year with Total Films when promoting Star Trek 2.
I've already asked him (Abrams) if I can be a lightsaber and we're in talks – about whirring sounds and the rates for the lights and everything [laughs].
I was much more connected to [Star Wars] as a kid, in the way that a lot of kids are because it’s immediate storytelling, very simple – a beautifully, outrageously simple narrative in a way – and a wonderful three-act melodrama, opera. And I loved them. I really, really loved those films and I always wanted to be Han Solo. Everything Harrison Ford did I just thought was the coolest thing ever.
So all signs are pointing to this being not just an internet rumor, but something that will be getting official confirmation within the next few days. What do you think? Is this just another silly rumor or do you think it's for real? Do you even like the casting at all? Sound off in the comments.
