We're all preparing to say goodbye to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine with #Logan. With such a heart-breaking departure, the actor has naturally been bombarded with inquires about a possible return to the sharp adamantium claws.
And for every time he's been asked about it, he's explained it feels like the right time to retire after almost two decades of being in the #XMen universe:
"It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. … I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out."
So, would anything get him to stay as our beloved #Wolverine? For a long time, it didn't look like it. But now, it turns out, something could have stopped his departure: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That's right, the actor sat down for an interview with Screen Rant and he was asked whether an Avengers crossover would have made him reconsider his retirement. Get ready to slam your fists in frustration, because Jackman revealed that, indeed, he would have given it a second thought if that dream had ever become reality:
"If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out [laughter]. You never know."
So, does he have any specific storylines or characters that he would have liked to see adapted for Wolverine in the #MCU? The answer's yes:
"I don’t know. This was the one that I really thought…When I spoke with the guys who created Old Man Logan – a lot of people think, 'Oh this is Old Man Logan.' And I’m like, 'Well… The inspiration for that was 'Unforgiven'.' That’s what we have in common. But there’s no Hulk babies in this one [laughter]"
The most heartbreaking reveal, however, came when he finally confirmed he would not have retired as Wolverine if the character had been in the MCU...
"At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last. It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character]."
Jackman's excitement at the prospect of the X-Men joining the MCU is not a surprise. Before Avengers: Age of Ultron was released, he expressed his desire to see Wolverine join Earth's Mightiest Heroes:
“I would love to see him as part of The Avengers. Because there’s a great dysfunction among that team, and I think Wolverine would fit right into that. He’d like that. There’s no doubt he’d get in a fight with Hulk at some point. Those two bad, rage-filled characters are going to square off at some point. It would be quite fun. I don’t know how much fun to shoot it would be because I’m sure I’d be on the worst end of it, but hey, he can heal.”

What is a surprise is the fact that he would have continued playing the character if he were allowed to play in the vastness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meaning he is still willing to play the character, granted, in different circumstances and in a different environment. That could relate to his sentiment of already exploring every corner of the Wolverine, which we know meant every corner in the X-Men universe. If they ever called him back into action, he'd certainly be ready for it:
There have been some hints of Fox slowly repairing its relationship with #Marvel Studios. Last year, the people behind Deadpool revealed they were trying to "build bridges" for a Spider-Man/Deadpool crossover. And more recently, both studios have been working on Legion and the upcoming Untitled X-Men TV series together.
So there is some cooperation between the two companies at last. Whether their new relationship allows for the X-Men to go to the MCU in time for #HughJackman to reconsider appearing as Wolverine remains to be seen, but all we can do right now is cross our fingers and hope that happens.
Will Wolverine join the MCU?
