As part of 's big (bad) Hollywood breakout, the Sherlock star has taken on the challenge of playing Smaug the dragon in 's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. According to his co-star , he's doing a damn fine job.

Metro reports that McKellan commented:

Doing motion capture for for a part such as that is tricky, I mean how do you play a dragon? Then again, before Lord Of The Rings people were saying how on Earth do you play a Gollum?

The actor, who plays Gandalf, went on to say:

None of us have seen the finished Smaug yet but I saw Benedict Cumberbatch's screen test and it was very impressive.

I don't doubt that for a second. Cumberbatch is an endlessly talented actor (next up in Star Trek Into Darkness) and I'm stoked with his Smaug casting. However, I would have preferred to actually see him on screen, perhaps in the role of Bard the Bowman. What say you?

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug arrives in theaters December 13th.
