Behold! It's the end of an era. has just wrapped his final scene as the iconic Gandalf. McKellen originally took on the role in 1999 for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Since then he's appeared in two more LOTR movies, and will also appear as the wise wizard in all three The Hobbit films. Director posted the following picture and caption to Facebook:

Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now.

, who plays the Dwarf Ori added on Twitter:

For many young people, Gandalf will the the Obi-Wan Kenobi of a generation, someone who was instrumental in wining the War of the Ring and helping the Dwarfs take back Erebor. Now, however his journey has come to end, and after this year's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and 2014's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, I don't expect we'll see Ian McKellen don his wizard robes and massive beard again.

What do you think? Are you sad to think Gandalf will never return in another film, or do you expect they'll just reboot the entire franchise in a few years anyway? Get emotional below.
