There are a lot of great things about 20th Century Fox's #XMen series; a lot of not so great things (looking at you Rogue), but enough good stuff to keep the now 17 year old franchise rocking along. And two of the greatest things come in the form of best buddies, the legendary actors Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
Stewart and McKellen have portrayed Charles Xavier/Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto since the franchise kicked off with X-Men back in 2000. Physically an almost perfect match for their respective characters, the two have played the frenemies for nearly two decades now.

The latest installment in the franchise, #Logan, marks the end of another great run, as Hugh Jackman hangs up his claws as Wolverine, a long-time fan favorite. And new reports are suggesting that Stewart may follow suit, as he confesses that Logan will be his final outing as Charles Xavier.
With the new movie set in a post-apocalyptic future, many characters from the series don't pop up. Notably, Xavier is there but #Magneto does not appear. Appearing on the Graham Norton Show alongside Stewart and Jackman, McKellen was asked about his character's absence from Logan. He jokingly responded:
"You know, I think when you get to my age, you want to leave aside those tired, old franchises. You know, move onto to something fresh. I sometimes cry myself to sleep. I simply don’t know why I’m not in it, darling."
McKellen also tried to convince Jackman to do another #Wolverine movie in which Magneto could appear, and jokingly pointed out that Stewart's character died in X-Men: The Last Stand, telling him, "It’s time you died."
Thankfully because of the timelines being switched up, and the fact that it's a comic book franchise, continuity can and will be thrown to the wolves. So maybe we will see Professor X or Magneto appearing again, but when we do likely they will be portrayed by their younger counterparts, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.
Last we saw of McKellen's Magneto was in X-Men: Days of Future Past, albeit in a reduced capacity. At the moment we don't know where the franchise will go after last year's X-Men: Apocalypse continued with the timeline reset of Days of Future Past to introduce a new cast roster filled with younger mutants.
But sadly in this universe, there's not really any space for the older Magneto and Charles Xavier to appear. Maybe, as McKellen says, it's time for them to die. (Don't worry though, superheroes always come back).
Do you think Ian McKellen will ever return to the franchise as Magneto? Have your say in the comments below!
