It looks like Ian Somerhalder is as passionate about saving the environment as Damon Salvatore is about Elena Gilbert!

Star of CW The Vampire Diaries, heartthrob Somerhalder is part of Showtime's Years of Living Dangerously, which examines climate change through personal stories.

Taking on the hot topic in Showtime's new eight-part docu-series is a multi-part documentary from executive producers such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron and marks a collaboration between some of Hollywood's biggest stars. No surprise, then, that Somerhalder's been tweeting about how proud he is:

As much as I love the Somlder-holder and anyone else who's trying to save the environment, Ian's social media presence comes after he's been flying all over the world for work and - last I heard, he wishing his fans a happy 2014 from the Far East. Funnily enough, flying 6,500 across the planet ain't all that good for the environment either, contributing to the acceleration of global warming. Whoopsie, Ian!

I appreciate what these slebs are trying to do, but I just can't shake the feeling that it's one big Hollywood vanity project... What d'you guys think?

Don't miss Ian in Showtime's Years of Living Dangerously premiering Sunday, April 13 at 10 PM on Showtime.
