In the pantheon of the great performances, the actor's turn as a well-paunched, sleazy and drug-crazed lawyer in 's Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas may be the one, overlooked gem.

If you think likewise, the news that del Toro joined 's Thomas Pynchon adaptation Inherent Vice should be a treat indeed.

According to The Wrap, The Academy Award winner will play the small but showy role of Sauncho Smilex, the lawyer of the unlikely hero, private investigator and pothead Larry 'Doc' Sportello ().

Sauncho is quite a bit different from Fear & Loathing's Dr. Gonzo in that he is far less of a life-threat when intoxicated - but intoxicated he is pretty much constantly. It's a great, off-the-wall character who should give Mr. del Toro ample opportunity to steal a couple of scenes in his highly welcome return to the 1970s!
