The 2013 IFP Gotham Awards came to a close with Inside Llewyn Davis, Fruitvale Station, Short Term 12 and Dallas Buyers Club taking the top honors. The event kicked off in New York City on Monday night and was not without a dash of controversy over some remarks made by , director of The Butler.
The Coen Brothers have done it again and received the award for Best Feature for their newest film Inside Llewyn Davis, despite jests about the folk music subject matter by the event's host . The crowd was reportedly quite loud throughout the ceremony, particularly while Lee Daniels was attempting to pay tribute to his colleague and friend . The crowd was talking so loudly he eventually scolded:
Forest would like to hear all you talking through my speech, so shut the f*ck up
After which he explained Forest's instrumental help and guidance in keeping his anger to himself:
When I did research for The Butler I became very angry at white people. That shit ain’t funny because it’s not funny what happened. … The lesson I learned when I did The Butler was that Forest told me to keep my anger in, to not be a stereotypical angry black man. Because if I were angry and I saw racism, then it became real. I had to step above it and pretend it wasn’t there. How do you tell your 17-year-old son that you can’t go into a 7-Eleven because you’re African-American and a dude? But Forest helped me through that. He taught me a lot.
took home the award for Best Actor, for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. He unfortunately had to accept the honour through the iphone of co-star , and was unable to take the award home.
The night was also characterized by tributes given to , Forest Whitaker, , and Katherine Oliver. Numerous speeches were given by present and former collaborators including and . New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in attendance to give a tribute to New York City Media and Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver, and praised her role in keeping film production in New York rather than fleeing to Toronto. Cunning politician that he is, Bloomberg seemingly never misses an opportunity, and also used the time to mention:
For the record: the mayor of Toronto and the mayor of New York do not have a lot in common.
It remains to be determined how damaging this has been to New York's film industry.
