To avoid fainting, keep repeating 'It's only a movie...It's only a movie...'

In an advertising move about as subtle as a corporate-sponsored sledgehammer to the face, Aria () and Jake () actively discussed the trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2 in a recent Pretty Little Liars episode! The couple are kicking back, chilling on the sofa, when the horror trailer pops up on their TV. Jake asks casually, 'have you seen the first one?', to which Aria replies, au naturelle, 'Twice - this one looks even more terrifying.' No, Aria, what is really terrifying is that this bizarro promo-of-the-damned will probably work.

Aiming for the younger demographic is a smart financial move but can come off as a bit...creepy? Hey kids, you like slushy teen romances, right? Weeeell, how about this HORRIFYING movie that will make you sob into your steady's Abercrombie & Fitch sweater at your prom? The joke is compounded by the fact that the Insidious: Chapter 2 spot was hosted on ABC Family; pull up a seat, pops, gather the kids around and lets scare the holy bejeezus outta ya!

There has to be a new term for this type of unapologetic promotion, as 'product placement' seems a little too euphemistic. 'Product shoving'? 'Ad-bombing'? Now trailers are subtly weaved into the fabric of the teleplay itself, we don't even have to wait for the next ad break for advertising! These people have no limits! They better keep their hands off Game of Thrones, that's all I can say. Any ad exec that gives me 'Gee, Tyrion, this Canesten Duo really cleared up my thrush' is getting savaged by a dire wolf.
