The day someone green-lights a Marvel Zombies Ghibli film directed by Xavier Dolan is the day I will be happy. Any day now...

Like its namesake, Insidious surreptitiously crept into the minds of horror fans everywhere and established itself as one of the go-to franchises of recent years, long before director James Wan hit the big time with Furious 7.

Each film in the series has freaked out audiences with an array of demonic forces, including the Bride in Black and the Lipstick-Face Demon. Yet throughout it all, the darkness has been kept at bay by an unlikely hero in scream queen Lin Shaye.

At the age of 73, Shaye may not be the obvious choice to lead a franchise. But after starring in countless scare-fests over the years, including Ouija, Dead End and A Nightmare On Elm Street, it's hard to imagine anyone else who could play psychic demonologist Elise Rainier better.

Fortunately for us then, Shaye is back once again, taking center stage in the first official image from Leigh Whannell's Insidious: Chapter 4, which appears to be set in the otherworldly realm of the Further.

This time round, Elise Rainier will be joined by a new character called Aubrey, who's played by Tessa Ferrer (Grey's Anatomy). Little has been revealed about this new addition to the cast so far, but if this image is anything to go by, there's a chance that she may not even be alive. After all, Aubrey's old-fashioned clothing and hair suggest that she could have died long ago, and her presence in The Further certainly lends credence to this theory.

However, there's also a chance that Aubrey could simply be another psychic, sharing Lin's ability to venture into the ghostly dimension. In an interview with Daily Dead, Shaye revealed that viewers will meet her character's family in Insidious: Chapter 4, so it's entirely possible that Elise is related to this new cast member:

“You meet my family, my mother, my father. We go back to my hometown, which is in New Mexico, and so that’s where this takes place and her quest to find the bad guy that’s been haunting her.”

Presumably, this 'bad guy' is none other than the Lipstick Faced Demon, who we last saw terrorizing Elise at the end of Insidious: Chapter 3. After all, Shaye revealed in the same interview that the next instalment of the franchise would follow on from that cliffhanger ending:

“It [Chapter 4] takes place right after the end of Chapter 3 when she walks off with Specs and Tucker and they’re starting their company, Spectral Sightings, and they are now living at her home. They’re like her two sons, her two bad sons.”

In box-office terms, producer James Wan may have found more success with franchise, but has more than its fair share of fans too, which leads us to believe that this won't be the last time we see Lin Shaye venture into The Further. For now though, we'll just fervently look over our shoulders for the next 10 months or so, praying that the Lipstick Faced Demon doesn't take us before Insidious: Chapter 4 finally hits cinema on October 20, 2017.
