When it comes to Harley Quinn cosplayers, there may be none quite as popular as Australian Laura Gilbert. That said, most fans simply know her as "The Infamous Harley Quinn." Laura hasn't been in the cosplay game for very long, but she has quickly risen above the typical #HarleyQuinn lookalike (largely due to her screen accurate cosplay and uncanny resemblance to Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie).
Late last year, I was lucky enough to interview Laura regarding her incredible 2016 stint as the crazed lunatic we all know and love. Now, after some time has passed, she's back and talking plans for 2017! So without further ado, let's get into it:
BT: The last time we talked you had just wrapped up a life-changing year where you were sort of new to cosplaying and quickly rose to fame. That said, do you feel that all the attention and experiences you’ve had will help your cosplaying this year?
"I have definitely learned a lot about cosplay and its community in a very expedited process! With that being said, it will undeniably make my future cosplays and journeys a lot easier."
BT: Another cool event that happened since the last time we spoke was that you got to meet Karen Fukuhara. Tell us a little about what that was like, and did she notice the resemblance you bare to Margot Robbie?
"It was utterly embarrassing. I spoke 3 times louder than normal! Karen actually stated that she had seen me on social media and in response I replied 'I've seen you everywhere' and it was super clunky! She is such a lovely person."
BT: Speaking of social media, I saw that you recently received a replica of Negan’s bat, Lucille. Can we expect some sort of The Walking Dead/Harley Quinn crossover cosplay?
"Most definitely! I got an incredible replica bat ("Lucille") from @praetorian_ventures on Instagram that has actual barbed wire. So I don't think this cosplay will be going to actual conventions!"
BT: Everyone can agree that you have mastered the Suicide Squad Harley Quinn look, but are there any other versions of Harley that you’re really wanting to try?
"I am working on a variety of 'SS' Harley crossovers and definitely wanting to have my 'BTAS' and bombshell Harley done by the end of the year!"
BT: Other than Harley Quinn, are there any other DC characters that you would like to cosplay?
"Most definitely Catwoman, especially Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, and a gender bend Joker! I love being a villain."
BT: One of the best parts about your Harley Quinn cosplay is your attention to detail. Is there anywhere in particular that is your go-to place for ordering pieces for your cosplay?
"Etsy is an extremely useful site that I use which includes a lot of handcrafted products!"
BT: After you have all the items you need for your Harley Quinn cosplay, how long does it typically take you to put on the outfit plus the makeup?
"It takes 2.5 to 3 hours. This includes all the tattoos, hair, makeup, SFX. Plus the shoes take ages to lace up properly!"
BT: Looking later on into this year, are there any comic-cons you plan to hit in other countries? Is San Diego International Comic-Con on the agenda?
"Unfortunately I was a bit late in planning an appearance for San Diego. In terms of international conventions, I will be attending Comic-Con in Ecuador in August! Definitely trying my best to make it to as many Australian conventions as possible."
BT: What would you consider to be the coolest experience you’ve had so far in your cosplaying journey?
"Coolest experience is definitely making new friends that are mutually passionate about your hobby! I love how cosplay has created some amazing friendships in my life and that is by far one of the most rewarding parts of it."
BT: Wrapping things up, many fans of yours know that you’re big into fitness. In a world that sadly seems to focus a lot on physical appearance, how does it feel to be a be a role model in the world of fitness that proves to women and men alike that you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and treat yourself to the occasional burger?
"Fitness is a huge passion of mine and I am very driven to advocate a healthy lifestyle to all my followers! I have been both underweight and overweight in my lifetime so I can relate to a lot of people struggling with body image. A healthy lifestyle is all about balance and that is definitely a message I like to promote through my social media. Yes, I eat the occasional burger once a fortnight, but that is balanced with 5/6 days of gym a week and clean eating!"
There you have it! Personally, I find it great that the cosplay community has such solid role models like Laura. It helps clean up the craziness in the world one step at a time!
