With The Vampire Diaries and Arrow making waves on The CW, it's often easy to forget about their faithful long-running demon-hunting series, Supernatural. The show is currently approaching the end of Season 8, and already speculation is rife about whether it will return for 9.

According to IGN, things are looking pretty good for Supernatural fans. While talking at the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour, The CW president, Mark Pedowitz, had this to say about Supernatural's possible return:

"No determination’s been made. We are pleased with how Wednesday night completely has worked out with Arrow being a bona fide hit and Supernatural actually gaining viewers back again. I think creatively the show’s in a great place and there’s always a good shot that [a renewal] could happen."

Series creator Eric Kripke only ever intended for Supernatural to run for five seasons, but the show proved such a hit in its early years that this was greatly extended. Although the show may have been slightly overshadowed by The CW's flagship supernatural drama, The Vampire Diaries, it still commands a dedicated and loyal fanbase. According to Pedowitz, these fans won't have long to wait until they can expect news about the future of Supernatural. Pedowitz explained:

"I would like to see our schedule come back on [with new episodes] next week, which we start on Monday and over the next couple of weeks we’ll make the determination on what will come back for next fall."

He also went on to confirm that stars and are definitely "locked in" for future seasons if/when they happen. All-in-all I think Supernatural fans can get quietly optimistic about seeing some more ghost and demon action this fall.
