James Cromwell, best known for his roles in Babe, Star Trek: First Contact and American Horror Story: Asylum, is set to spend a week in Orange County Jail. The celebrated actor refused to pay a $375 fine after he was arrested during a protest in Wawayanda, New York.
Cromwell is one of seven people found guilty of obstructing traffic at the proposed site of a natural gas-fired power plant owned by Competitive Power Ventures. The #AmericanHorrorStory actor wasn't the only one who refused to pay the fine; two other protesters also refused to pay up.
This isn't the first time Cromwell has been arrested for protesting. The 77-year-old actor protested against experiments being conducted on cats at the University of Wisconsin back in 2013.
Cromwell is arguably best known for his role in classic family film Babe, but the legendary actor saw a resurgence in his career in 2012 when he starred as the villainous Dr. Arthur Arden in American Horror Story: Asylum. Acting opposite Jessica Lange, Cromwell's character was nothing short of sinister and his, ahem, killer performance landed him an Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie. He has also appeared in Halt and Catch Fire, 24 and Six Feet Under.
Other Celebrities Who Have Been Arrested For Protesting
While Cromwell's arrest has been making waves on social media, it isn't the first time that we've seen a celebrity take part in protests. Over the years, several big name stars have been arrested for standing their ground during protests. Let's take a look at some of the others:
The Feud actress found herself on the wrong side of the law back in 1999. Sarandon was one of 219 people who were arrested while protesting at the New York police headquarters over the police shooting of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed West African immigrant. Diallo was shot at 41 times by four cops who were all indicted and later acquitted. Sarandon said at the time:
"If we're not here today, then we're saying that what happened is acceptable and normal, and I think that does a disservice to the other police."
Much like Sarandon and Cromwell, Shailene Woodley stuck to her principles, protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline on Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation — and, as a result, was arrested for criminal trespassing.
Even a former Caped Crusader can find himself on the wrong side of the law. Clooney was arrested back in 2012 after protesting at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. The actor was charged with a misdemeanor and paid a $100 fine instead of appearing in court.
Best known for her role in the hit HBO series Sex and the City and its subesequent feature films, Cynthia Nixon is no stranger to on-screen controversy. However, the actress found herself involved in some real life chaos when she was arrested during a protest back in 2002. Nixon was protesting in aid of better funding for public schools, alongside 11 other people.
